Wakestock 2004 Pro Results & Highlights
Related Items: INCREDIBLE RIDING & RECORD CROWDS HIGHLIGHT WAKESTOCK 2004 Wasaga Beach, Canada: With 41,000 action sports fans along for the ride, WAKESTOCK boosted Wakeboarding and Action Sports & Music Festivals to an epic new level. Wakestock furthered its rep as the leading wakeboarding event on the planet by challenging the super stars of the sport with four different pro events presented by Malibu Boats, Billabong, and the Extreme Sports Series. Included in the pro events were the biggest railslide course ever built and an unique, new wakeskate rail jam that took place in a series of pools.
Wakestock Wakeboarding Championship highlights: Wakestock World Series Expression Session: Florida’s Darin Shapiro won his first WWA World Series of the year, a day after a disappointing 8th place finish at X-Games. Darin stomped a massive “Speedball” (double front flip) off of the double-up to cap a masterful run combination of rail and wake tricks. The win also made Darin a two time Wakestock champ. He won in 2000. Australia’s Brett Eisenhauer finished second, followed closely by fast rising star JD Webb of Florida. Wakestock Railslide Championship: Florida’s Shane Bonifay rose to the forefront of wakeboarding’s rail progression with an impressive victory over the who’s who of railsliding, including his older bro Parks, the defending Wakestock Rail Champ. Shane combined his smooth standout style with an impressive repertoire of flawless technical slides, particularly on the two 90 foot long kinked step-up rails in front of the Coors Light Beer Garden crowd. Second place in the prestigious Wakestock Railslide event went to American Colin Harrington, followed by Australian Josh Sanders in third. The Wakestock rail course is noted as the world’s largest and most challenging and this year featured four custom built “posted rails” by Florida’s Pat Panakos of “The Projects” fame, plus two floating sliders, including a huge 80 foot floating funbox dubbed the “Titanic” by the riders. “This an incredibly satisfying win for me”, said Bonifay. “I always wanted to win one of the famous Wakestock Championship belts, and after seven years competing at Wakestock I’ve finally done it!” Wakestock Wakeskate Championship: Wakestock was the first pro event to include Wakeskating, pioneering it’s competition format back in 1999. This year Wakestock took wakeskating to another level with the introduction of a second event, the “Wakesk8 Beach Jam” presented by Garnier Fructis Style. The Wakeskate Championship was stacked with legendary names like Scott Byerly and Thomas Horrell, current rulers like Brian Grubb and Aaron Reed, and up-and-comers like George Daniels. Wakeskaters had the full run of the Wakestock rail course which added an additional challenge. In the end it was Florida’s George Daniels stepping up for the win, ahead of fellow Floridians Reed and Grubb. The “Beach Jam” featured a mechanized winch-powered ride through two pools separated by a 15 step staircase and step-down rail. The Beach Jam’s rider-judged best trick winner was Canada’s Ryan Doyle who stomped a difficult “shuvit” (180 board flip) on the down rail. Wakestock Festival Highlights: Wakestock set a new standard for action sports & music festivals in Canada with its trademark 4 days of boarding, bands & bikinis delivering non-stop, multi-event action. Here are the highlights: Music Festival: Stand-out live shows by Moneen, AlexisOnFire, The Ataris and Andrew WK among the 16 bands who performed on the Extreme Music Series stage in front of a frenzied crowd of several thousand on Saturday afternoon. Presented by 102.1 the Edge. Miss Reef Canada Bikini Contest: It was a tough choice for the judges, who included defending Wakestock Wakeskate Champ Brian Grubb and FMX pro athlete Jason Thorne. But with the help of several thousand screaming fans they awarded Kelowna, B.C’s beautiful Rebecca Leigh Williams the Miss Reef crown. Runner up was Becky Bundschuh of Vancouver, followed Amy Merrin of Lindsay, Ontario. Mars Skatepark: One of Wakestock’s most active areas, the Mars skatepark hosted over 4,000 skaters throughout the four day festival and showcased the skills of Canada’s top skaters, including Dan Pageau, Jason Crolly, Chad Albert, Ryan Blaxall. Wakestock FMX Expression Session: Canada’s top eight freestyle moto-x jumpers boosted Wakestock’s 5th annual FMX Expression Session to new heights with a three jump course including a back flip jump and an 80 foot gap. Highlights included Jeff Banks’ huge backflips and double rider gaps. Pro Kiteboarding: Several of Canada’s top kiteboarders took advantage of excellent winds and waves on Georgian Bay hitting 20 foot high jumps and 20 kmh riders through the surf. Action Sports Expo: With over 50 retailers and manufacturers representing the leading names in surf, wake, skate, moto-x and music, the Wakestock Action Sports Expo was hopping with crowds taking advantage of deals on clothing, gear and accessories all weekend long. Parties: The Dard nightclub in Wasaga Beach rocked with Wakestock Parties every night, presented by the Extreme Music Series. A highlight for wakeboarders was the Sidewayz Films Premiere of “Retrospect” at the Billabong Pro Rider’s Party. Wakestock will be broadcast on TV nationally in Canada (Global TV & Xtreme Sport Channel) and the USA (Fuel TV) later this year. Check your local listings or www.wakestock.com for more info.
