Saturday Sept 11th and Sunday Sept 12th marked the final
weekend show down in the Hyperlite wakeboard tour
series. With a total of 6 weekends the tour traveled not
only around BC but visited parts of Alberta and
Saskatoon.
Our first comp at Woods Lake in Kelowna entitled
“Deviate Slider Showdown” saw more than 70 riders
compete. The Pro riders set the bar for the rest of the
competition which ended this weekend in one of the
largest cash prizes for Pro I’ve seen at a local Pro/Am
comp.
At our second stop, Riverside Park in Kamloops, one of
the best BC sites for riders and spectators, there was
lots of interest from the general public who lined the
shore of the river enjoying the hot Okanagan weather and
cheering on our riders. Again, pro and amateur rode well
displaying wakeboarding at it’s best.
Unfortunately I did not get to go to Alberta or
Saskatoon but I was told everyone there had a lot of
fun, there was some awesome riding and even though the
weather didn’t hold out at times, the tour was a
success.
This past weekend at Abbotsford was awesome, even though
the weather the past few weeks has been mostly rain,
after a 5 minute shower early Saturday morning we had
nothing but blue (ok sometimes cloudy) skies and the
occasional sunny break. 80 riders competed, besides our
BC riders we also had Mike Donald and Kyle Rattray from
Ontario as well as Lockey Price and Brad Buskas from
Alberta.
Our Jr Mens division was the largest all year. 18 riders
competed for the podium, Daniel Dyck, who stepped it up
from the boys/girls 10-13 division, scored first place,
Cody Fisher placing second and Will Grimm in third. Our
only girl Danielle Boyd, who started riding with the
boys in Kamloops, just missed out on making finals by
coming in third in her heat (we took top 2). The Jr Men
had better watch out next year, she wants a podium
placement and I have a feeling she’s going to give them
a run for their money.
There was a lot of excitement over the pro finals this
weekend. The way the overall standings were the top 5
pro riders were all in line for first overall and the
cash booty was one of the largest I’ve seen in local
competition. We knew we were in for quite the showdown.
Everyone rode well, although a few guys had a little bad
luck. Mike Donald from Ontario started off strong (yeah
Pickering local!) but unfortunately tweaked his ankle
and even though he tried hard to finish his run he
wasn’t able to. Jamie Rose rode well, pulled off his
sweet off axis spins but just missed podium. Even so he
still managed to snag second place overall on the tour!
Lockey Price went huge and clean and it landed him in
first place as well as first overall for the tour. Brad
Buskas placed second as well as third overall and Kyle
Rattray took third.
This season saw a lot of the guys and girls step it up.
There was solid riding and of course lots of good times.
The 2004 Hyperlite Tour was a huge success and I’m sure
we’ll be seeing you all next year. Stay tuned to the BC
page for updates and 2005 tour dates!
See ya on the water!
